Most AI agents are ChatGPT wrappers: test value before you buy
In December 2025, everyone is selling an AI agent. The market is full of tools that promise to be your AI employee, your AI SDR or your AI marketer. Most of them are a chat window with a new logo and a higher price.
In my view, about 90% of the AI agents on sale in December 2025 were ChatGPT wrappers with a higher price tag. Before you buy one, check whether it integrates specific knowledge or connects to tools you cannot reach otherwise. If it does neither, keep your money and write a better prompt in the tool you already pay for.
What is a ChatGPT wrapper?
A ChatGPT wrapper is a product that puts its own interface and price on top of a general AI model and adds little else. An AI agent, in the useful sense, is software that gets a goal and decides the steps to reach it. Many products sold as agents are only wrappers.
What the overpayment looks like
In my 2025 audits of client tech stacks, I found businesses that paid $50 a month for "specialized agents." Those agents did nothing more than a well-prompted custom GPT could do for $20 a month. A custom GPT is a ChatGPT setup with your own instructions and files.
The difference is $30 a month for each agent. You pay that difference for a chat window, not for new capability.
How to check an AI agent before you buy it
Do this check before every new agent subscription.
- Check for knowledge integration. Ask what specific knowledge the agent brings. Your own data or a specialist knowledge base is added value. A general model with a system prompt is not.
- Check for tool access. Ask which tools the agent connects to. If it reaches systems that you cannot connect otherwise, it can earn its price.
- Test the job in the tool you already have. If the agent is only a chat interface that writes emails, you do not need a new subscription. You need a better prompt. My guide to boring prompts that work shows how to write one.
AI agent or automation flow: which do you need?
An automation flow follows rules. An AI agent follows a goal. Pick the one that matches how predictable the task is.
An automation flow is deterministic: "If X happens, do Y." It never deviates. Tools such as n8n and Make build automation flows. Use them for data flows where you need 100% accuracy.
An AI agent is probabilistic. You give it a goal, for example "Handle this customer return." The agent decides the steps itself from the context: check the return policy, generate the label, email the customer.
| Automation flow | AI agent | |
|---|---|---|
| Logic | Deterministic: fixed rules | Probabilistic: works toward a goal |
| Example | If X happens, do Y | Handle this customer return |
| Steps | You define every step | The agent decides the steps from context |
| Best for | Predictable tasks, data that must be 100% accurate | Tasks that need judgment or creativity |
Use automation for predictable tasks. Use AI for tasks that need creativity. If you are choosing an automation tool, read my comparison of Zapier, Make and n8n. If you need to decide which pattern a process needs, the Automation Architecture Guide helps you name it before you build.
The bottom line
A new agent is worth its price only when it adds knowledge or tool access that you do not have. Everything else is a subscription for a prompt you can write yourself.

Frequently asked questions
Are most AI agents just ChatGPT wrappers?
Yuri Vonchitzki of Ninjabot estimates that 90% of the AI agents on sale in December 2025 were ChatGPT wrappers with a higher price tag. A ChatGPT wrapper is a product that puts its own interface and price on top of a general model and adds little else. If an agent only gives you a chat window that writes emails, it adds no value over the tool you already pay for.
How do I check if an AI agent is worth paying for?
Ask two questions before you buy an AI agent. First, does it integrate specific knowledge, such as your own data or a specialist knowledge base? Second, does it connect to tools that you cannot reach otherwise? If the answer to both is no, do not buy a new subscription. Write a better prompt in the AI tool you already have.
What is the difference between an AI agent and an automation flow?
An automation flow is deterministic: it follows strict rules (if X happens, do Y) and never deviates. Tools such as n8n and Make build automation flows. An AI agent is probabilistic: it gets a goal, such as handling a customer return, and decides the steps itself from the context. Use automation flows for predictable tasks and AI agents for tasks that need judgment.
Can a custom GPT replace a paid AI agent subscription?
It often can. In his 2025 audits of client tech stacks, Yuri Vonchitzki of Ninjabot found businesses that paid $50 a month for specialized AI agents that did nothing more than a well-prompted custom GPT could do for $20 a month. A custom GPT is a ChatGPT setup with your own instructions and files. Check what the paid agent adds before you renew.
